According to several international statistics and forecasts, urban tourism represents and will constitute a very large share of world tourism. The arrival of tourists in an already densely populated area poses a range of relevant issues in all the contemporary domains of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social). Economic sustainability relates to the viability of
tourism firms and activities in both the short and the long term. Social sustainability requires an equitable distribution of benefits and the respect of local communities, by recognizing all different cultures and by eliminating any form of exploitation. Environmental sustainability is particularly important in the case of nonrenewable environmental assets, but it also pertains to the
minimization of air, land and water pollution; all themes that are high in the agendas of local administrations. Originally, papers and books dealing with sustainable urban tourism development emphasized this last dimension but, currently, all three dimensions are thoroughly considered. In all contexts, the role of local stakeholders and of the tourism demand are taken into account, especially in terms of competing aims and incentives. The lecture aims at providing a review of the main findings of the relevant urban tourism literature. It will consider the strategies for sustainable tourism in cities, the relationships between tourism and transport, the public policies for sustainable transport, the role of information systems, and the aim towards net-zero emissions in tourism.
